Machine Learning Models for Predicting Facial Nerve Palsy in Parotid Gland Surgery for Benign Tumors

چکیده
BackgroundDespite the increasing use of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring during parotid gland surgery (PGS) and improvement in preoperative radiological assessment, injury (FNI) remains most severe complication after PGS. Until now, no studies have been published regarding application machine learning (ML) for predicting FNI We hypothesize that ML would improve prediction patients at risk.MethodsPatients who underwent PGS benign tumors between June 2010 2019 were included.ResultsRegarding accuracy performance each algorithm, K-nearest neighbor random forest achieved highest sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative value F-score, receiver operating characteristic (ROC)–area under ROC curve, globally. The algorithm values above 0.9 F-score ROC–area sensitivity value.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates models can provide evidence-based predictions about risk to otolaryngologists patients. It is hoped such algorithms, which clinical, radiological, histological, cytological information, information given before so they be better informed any potential complications.

Extracapsular Dissection with Facial Nerve Dissection for Benign Parotid Tumors.
E xtracapsular dissection with facial nerve dissection (ECD-FND) uses standard surgical landmarks to identify and antegrade dissect the facial nerve trunk at the onset of the procedure. The branches of the facial nerve are dissected up to the anterior extracapsular margin of the tumor; then, the tumor is dissected with a thin layer (1-2 mm) of parenchyma and fascia around it (Figure 1). Extraca...

متن کاملPattern of Distribution in Facial Nerve in the Benign Parotid Gland Tumors
Generally in any parotid surgery it is necessary to identify the trunk and branches of the facial nerve. For damage to this nerveor its branches may have irreparable consequences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of anatomical variation of facial nerve branching in patients undergoing parotid surgery. 94 patients undergone parotid surgery in Imam Khomeini Hospital of Jond...
متن کاملFacial nerve palsy and Frey's syndrome in parotid surgery
uring parotid gland tumor resection, operations involving the facial nerve must be performed with the utmost caution. Postoperative facial nerve palsy is a complication that should be avoided. However, even when the parotid gland tissue is carefully and atraumatically dissected, transient paralysis can occur. Although paralysis improves over time, the duration is variable. Frey's syndrome is an...
متن کاملPredictors of facial palsy after surgery for benign parotid disease: multivariate analysis of 626 operations.
BACKGROUND The objective was to identify the risk factors for, and incidence of, facial palsy following conservative parotidectomy. METHODS Conservative parotidectomies for benign diseases (N = 626) were studied retrospectively. The risk factors for postoperative facial palsy were determined by univariate and multivariate analyses of variables related to patient demographics, comorbid illness...
